Black Sequin Evening Dress, Size 14

Charity's gala night at The International Hotel Telford

The function room, the stage lights, the moment the whole thing stopped feeling like an errand.

When the invitation came through for a black-tie dinner in Telford, I did the usual thing. Opened my wardrobe, looked at the same two gowns I've worn to every event since 2019, and closed it again. I'd been reading the Vogue best sequin dress edit the night before, and nothing I owned came close.

I'm a size 14 with actual curves — bust, waist, hips, all of it — and I've been let down enough times by evening dresses to know the routine. Something that looks beautiful on the hanger usually means you can't sit down after the starter. Something comfortable usually means you look like you gave up in 2014. I wanted a dress that could handle the red carpet, the three-course meal, and the dancing afterwards, without me hiding in the toilet undoing a zip.

So I took a chance on the black sequin one-shoulder evening dress. This is what happened.

01 — The Dress

A black base that throws every colour

It's a black base covered in tiny sequins that throw every colour you can think of — pink, gold, green, blue, silver — depending on where the light catches them. I'd been looking at black evening dresses for prom for weeks, and this one behaved differently the second it arrived.

In the hotel lobby, under the bright overhead lights near reception, it looked almost silver-white. Later, in the function room with the pink and purple stage lights washing over the wood-panelled wall, it looked like something else entirely. A woman at the next table came over before the speeches even started to ask where I got it.

The lobby, under reception lights — almost silver-white. Same dress, different colour.

The shape is a one-shoulder cut, with a single strap running diagonally across the chest and a small keyhole cutout beside it. It's a small detail, but it's the difference between a gown looking fine and looking like someone actually designed it. I'd been browsing black sequin prom dresses UK for a while, and the cutout is the detail that kept pulling me back to this one. It's fitted through the waist and hips and falls straight to the floor, with a little flare at the hem. I wore my green heeled shoes underneath — you can just spot them in the photos — and the length was spot on. Brushing the floor, not catching under my feet every time I took a step.

02 — The Fit

Size 14, and it genuinely fits

This is the part I was nervous about. Sequins mean lining, and lining usually means stiff, scratchy, and completely unforgiving. Not this one. The fabric has real stretch to it. It pulled on, settled over my bust and hips, and stayed exactly where I put it. No gaping at the neckline, no hem riding up, no seams pulling tight across my stomach after I'd eaten. I'm a size 14, I ordered a size 14, and that was the whole process. No sizing up "just in case," no last-minute dash to a seamstress, no panic.

And it's strong. I mean properly made. I've bought stretchy party dresses before where the fabric felt like it would surrender if you breathed too hard after dinner. This held its shape all night — sitting, standing, posing on the red carpet, dancing — and looked the same at midnight as it did when I first put it on. The shape is the same family as the black mermaid prom dresses UK I'd been eyeing, and it carries the same confidence without the stiffness.

03 — The Photos

The dress did the work for me

They'd laid a red carpet through the entrance with the chrome posts and velvet ropes, so we did the whole thing properly. I'm not a model — I'm a woman who wanted a handful of good photos from a nice night — and the dress did most of the work for me. The sequins catch the flash, so the pictures look expensive without trying. The cut does that thing where your waist looks smaller and your hips look deliberate.

I wore my hair half-up with a little crystal clip, and kept the jewellery simple: silver drop earrings, a thin necklace, a bracelet, and my watch. Red lipstick, because if you're wearing multicolour sequins, you may as well commit. The dress is already doing the most, so there was no reason to fight it with anything else. We took photos by the glass wall at reception, where the hotel name is printed on the frosted glass, and then again against the wooden slat wall where the event lighting was. Same dress, completely different colour in every shot.

04 — The Comfort

Was it actually comfortable? Yes.

I sat through a three-course meal. I sat through the speeches. I danced. I didn't change into anything else, and I didn't want to. The lining is soft against the skin, the stretch means nothing digs in, and the one-shoulder strap stayed put without cutting into my shoulder. I'd been comparing it to the long evening dresses for prom I'd tried in shops, and none of them let you forget you were wearing them. By the end of the night I'd genuinely forgotten I was wearing a gown, which is the highest compliment I can give anything that isn't pyjamas.

05 — The Review

“

This is a very beautiful dress. Great value for money and very comfortable. Stretchy enough to fit curves and it's strong with no fear of bursting.

“

Size 14. Beautiful, very comfortable, stretchy to fit all curves.

Quick Answers

Does a size-14 sequin dress fit true to size?
Yes — I ordered my usual 14 and it pulled on with no sizing up. The stretch handles the curves; the lining keeps the shape.

Can you sit through a meal in a sequin gown?
In this one, yes. Three courses, speeches and dancing, no zip undoing, no seam panic. The soft lining is the difference.

What do you wear to a black-tie dinner as a size-14 guest?
A one-shoulder sequin gown with a little flare at the hem. Statement enough for the red carpet, comfortable enough to forget about by dessert.

If you're a curvy woman with a gala, awards night, wedding, or Christmas ball coming up, and you're tired of choosing between looking good and feeling good — this is the dress. I paid a fraction of what I've spent on gowns that did a fraction of the work, and I'll wear it again. That's the part that matters.
