The Red Dress That Stole My 27th Birthday

I turned 27 and decided I was done with ‘cute’ birthday dresses. I wanted something that walks into the room before I do, you know? Found this sparkly red off-the-shoulder mini Dress? Job done.

Right, the boring stuff first because I know you’re all sizing-obsessed like me. I’m 6 foot half an inch – yes that half inch counts, don’t @ me. Usually a 14–16 in UK sizes. Bought the 14 in red and it fit like it was bloody made for me. No weird boob tension, no waist squeeze. The skirt’s that skater shape so it bounces when I move – proper fun.

But here’s the bit that actually matters for me: I’m mostly in a wheelchair. Chronic illness stuff – can’t stand more than a minute without going all dizzy and wobbly. So I knew the dress would sit different on me than on someone standing. When you’re sat down, the hem does creep up the thighs a bit. Didn’t bother me, but if you’re more covered-up, just chuck a lace kimono or red shawl over your lap. Two seconds and it still looks cute as hell.

The fabric caught me off guard – in a good way. Two layers. Outer’s a soft mesh with tiny glitter dots, not those cheap chunky sequins that shed everywhere. I’ve worn it a few times now and hand-washed it after my party – barely lost any sparkle. Underneath there’s a tulle lining that gives it volume, so it doesn't go flat in photos. Inner bit is soft against skin, not scratchy at all. Is it designer? Nah. But for the price, way better than I expected.

Wore it out on my actual birthday and it was light enough that I didn't overheat even in the restaurant. Wind didn't try to Marilyn Monroe me (always a risk with short hems). In sunlight it pops bright red – I was worried it might be see-through but nope, fully opaque even in direct daylight. Took pics in all sorts of lighting: outdoor sun, indoors by a blue wall, on a red studio backdrop, and one pitch-black room with just phone flash. The glitter changes in every light – that’s honestly my favourite bit.

A couple of minor gripes though. The spaghetti straps had a few loose threads – snipped them off, no drama. The zip was stiff as anything when it arrived – I proper struggled to even move it before putting it on. But after zipping up and down a bunch of times, it loosened right up. No snags on the fabric. For washing, I hand-washed gently and it survived. Could probably bung it in the machine inside-out in a pillowcase if you're lazy.

Now the fun bit – I made the whole look a vibe. Black velvet choker with a tiny red heart pendant. Subtle playing-card earrings because why not. Stacked a silver bangle and a pearl bracelet on one wrist. Shoes – red block-heel platforms with sheer black fishnets underneath, but I only stood for balcony photos so comfort wasn't a priority. Small black crossbody clutch with glitter and gold lining, thin silver chain. And for a few moody flash portraits, I chucked on these tiny heart-shaped sunnies – retro and ridiculous but it worked.

Makeup: winged black liner, loads of mascara, pale matte base, light contour. Berry red lip stain with a dab of gloss – matched the dress nicely. Nails were almond-shaped, burgundy with gold foil tips. Hair was just messy waves, nothing fussy. The off-shoulder sleeves do half the work for you anyway.

Got way more compliments than I expected. Strangers in the restaurant asked where it was from. Mates wanted to borrow it. Even after the party, every time I've worn it since, someone says something. It's properly become that dress.

If you're hovering over 'add to basket' – just do it. Birthdays, cocktails, photoshoots, date nights – it works. Tall-girl friendly. Wheelchair friendly with the shawl trick. Comfy enough to wear all day. Washes well. Looks exactly like the pics.

This little red sparkly number made my 27th feel special. And let's be real – I'll be reaching for it again and again.
