From Burnt Forest to Marilyn Monroe: One Dress, Two Looks

I got this dress for a shoot and I'm still kinda hype about how it turned out.

I had this idea in my head forever—like, something floaty and white and pretty but plunked down in the middle of somewhere rough and gnarly. So I found this gown and took it to this forest that had burned down a while ago. Everything was just black and gray—charred stumps, ash coating the ground, these twisted dead branches everywhere. And the white dress against all that? That was the whole thing. That's what made the shots.

I'm 5'5" and the dress was def on the longer side. Hem was dragging and bunching around my ankles, which was fine cause I was barefoot anyway. With heels it would've been perfect, but we were going for that natural vibe so I just let it pool. Honestly it worked out cause everytime I moved the skirt would sweep the ground and pick up dust and it made the photos look less posed.

The white dress is a halter with a deep V, knot at the waist, open back with crossed straps. Material is lightweight, no stiff crap, no boning. That was important. When I sat down it folded up in a way that looked natural, not all weird and bunchy. When I leaned back or reached up, the open back showed some skin and gave that whole soft vs rough contrast. The halter left my shoulders bare too, which was great for the lighting—golden hour sun coming through the dead trees, hitting the dress, making it glow against all that dark burned wood.

Hair and makeup was super simple. My hairs long and light brown so I just left it down and let it get messy. No fancy updo. Makeup was like nothing—just evened out my skin, tiny bit around the eyes, basically no lips. Stacked on some boho bracelets and a little pendant. We even let ash and soot stay on my arms on purpose, which ended up looking cool honestly.

Ok about the dirt. Yeah it got filthy. By the end the bottom was covered in grey-black smudges from all the ash and charcoal. I knelt in it, sat it in, dragged it through everything. Not gonna lie I was a little nervous at first. White dress + burnt forest = not the smartest combo. But I was like whatever, if the pics are good it's worth it. Got home, washed it gently, and somehow everything came out. No stains. I was actually surprised cause I've had dresses way less fragile get ruined after one wear.

What I didn't expect was how many ways I could wear this thing. Like normally you buy a dress like this for one specific thing—wedding, gala, whatever. But this one worked as a portrait piece in the middle of a burned forest and some of those are my fav shots ever. In a few frames the white dress looked almost symbolic, like something soft and alive in all that destruction. I did some kneeling shots with my palms up toward the light, some walking away from the camera, some tight ones against black trunks, and some wide shots where I was this tiny figure surrounded by all that black with gold light pouring through. The dress moved with me through all of it.

And the bonus—I'm gonna wear it for Halloween too. Marilyn Monroe vibes. That white halter dress is so iconic and this one has the right look.

Swap in some vintage earrings, curl my hair, red lipstick, heels—whole different thing. I love that I don't have to buy some cheap costume that falls apart. This dress goes from art shoot to Halloween to maybe even a formal thing later.

Buying stuff like this online is always a gamble. You never know how the fabric's going to move or if it'll photgraph well or if it'll fall apart after one shoot. I ordered it hoping it'd be decent and it ended up being way more. Looked great, survived hours on rough ground, cleaned up easy, and I can keep wearing it.

So if you're looking for a white evening dress thats not just a one-time thing, this one's worth checking. You don't need some fancy clean backdrop—sometimes the best shots come from putting something soft and pretty right next to something wild and beat up.

This whole shoot is prob my favorite creative thing in a while, and honestly a lot of that came down to the dress. It didn't just sit there—it actually helped tell the story.
